The name Three Bones draws from a Roman fable of Bacchus, the god of wine, who discovered the vine and sought a vessel in which it could flourish. He first planted it in the hollow bone of a bird, then of a lion, and finally of a donkey. From this, Bacchus taught that wine reveals the layered nature of humankind: in moderation we are light and joyful like birds; with excess, fierce and reckless like lions; and in abandon, foolish as donkeys. The story speaks to the delicate balance between freedom and restraint—the line where inspiration becomes chaos. The residency borrows its name as a quiet reminder of that same balance in art making: that creativity, like the vine, grows best when rooted in both vitality and discipline.
